During their bedside vigil, Jimmy jokingly recalls the time he accidentally invited two girlfriends to their mother’s surprise party. The sequence also underscores the animus and jealousy that Chuck feels for his sibling. That was the point of the opening scene, a flashback in which Chuck snows Jimmy about whether their mother had any final words on her hospital deathbed. The only missing piece was the insight that, for all his rectitude, Chuck can lie when he is in a foul enough mood. The season has been building toward this showdown as methodically as a bricklayer constructing a wall. The scheme doesn’t work unless Jimmy feels genuine fraternal love. It took planning, luck and - here comes the avert-your-gaze part - the certainty that Jimmy cares enough about Chuck to become his victim.
To pull off this sting, Chuck had to devise the kind of con that was heretofore Jimmy’s specialty. The up-close depiction of brothers locked in a bitter psychological war can be far harder to watch than murder.Ĭhuck has tricked Jimmy into confessing to a malign cut-and-paste job on some legal documents, an apparently felonious act that has been surreptitiously recorded. But I’d argue that the real brutality came from the white-collar side of this two-pronged tale.
